History
Even today, the universe largely remains a mystery to us. Despite several scientific discoveries
which explain some of these mysteries, many facts about the universe are still unknown. Human interest
in the universe dates back to the ancient times when people gazed at the sky in wonder and
puzzlement. With time this evolved into studies pertaining to astrophysics. The magnificence of the universe
can be glimpsed at from the innumerable stars and planets the lie beyond the earth and solar
system. It is of abiding interest and excitement that scientists do not rule out the possibility
of existence of life on planets other than earth.
The Meghnad Saha Planetarium, established in 1994, is not only a pride Burdwan, but perhaps the only planetarium in India operating under the auspices of any university. The Planetarium equipped with high quality projection system and modern technologies is organizing shows on the mysteries of universe, birth of stars, motion of planets, aspects of lunar exploration and other astrophysical phenomenon. These show also introduce viewers to the activities of the NASA and the European Space Agency related to space research. The shows also include information about the birth of the Milky Way, our neighboring galaxy Andromeda, the discovery of the mysterious black holes, the evolution of the solar system, comets and asteroid belts.
The Planetarium plays a pivotal role in making us aware of the dangers of environmental pollution and globle warming. The irreversible effects of industrial pollution, depletion of ozone layer, green house effect are certain contemporary issues that are also addressed in the shows organized by the Planetarium.
