Burdwan University: A Prelude

  • A State University began its journey on June 15, 1960 with 6 PG Departments and 30 Affiliated Colleges.
  • Grown as the Second Largest State University in West Bengal.
  • It has 316.31 acres' campus with 39 PG Departments and 74 Affiliated colleges.
  • The University is offering Certificate, Diploma, Honours, Post Graduate, M. Phil & Doctoral Programmes.
  • Total student strength: UG level: 1,44,489 and PG level: 5,998

Significant Achievements of the University:

  • NAAC Ranking: Assessed with 'A Grade' by the NAAC in 2016, Valid till 31.12.2022 – IIQA has been submitted successfully within validity period for reaccreditation for the next cycle in compliance.
  • Over the years, the University has consistently performed in the NIRF ranking by securing rank within top 100 under ‘University’ Category and occupied the rank of 89, 92, 85, 87 and 86 in the years 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 & 2023 respectively.
  • 04 departments have received level of “Centre for Advanced Studies” (CAS) [Physics, Chemistry, Botany & Bengali]
  • 08 departments have received level of “Departmental Research Support” (DRS) [Zoology, Geography, Statistics, English, Sanskrit, History, Commerce and Economics]
  • 01 department has received level of “Department of Special Assistance” (DSA) [Mathematics]
  • The Faculty members have already submitted 7 patent applications out of which 5 patents have been published and 2 patents have been granted. 5 copyrights are also granted to the faculty members of the University till date.
  • Rank of the University in National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) under ministry of Human Resource Development, GoI: 87th in 2022
  • Rank of the University in India Today Survey: 16th in 2022
  • 12 Faculty Members are appearing in the global top 2% scientist list published by Stanford University.

Academic, Administrative, Governance Reforms:

  • Total digitization of student life cycle management process (admission, student services, examination, alumni etc) has been executed from the academic session 2021-2022 through the software giant Tata Consultancy Services.
  • The students are provided with the Photocopies of the Answer Scripts of all examinations on demand.
  • Freeships are given to the students who stand 1st, 2nd and 3rd position in Annual Sports and participate in inter-university sports competition and those who obtain 1st and 2nd rank in each semester examination at P.G. level.
  • 2 Kiosks and 4 terminals are available for searching library resources; OPAC, Web-OPAC & MOPAC (Software) facilities available. The Central Library remains open every day for 8 hours.
  • The Central Library alone has an extensive collection of about 3 Lakh books and 10,000 online journals. Near about 3000 full-text Ph.D. thesis of the University have been digitized and uploaded in the SHODHGANGA server.
  • The campus is provided with high-speed Internet facility through NKN (National Knowledge Network).
  • The university has implemented Virtual Class Rooms in ten Post-graduate departments with the financial assistance from the Government of West Bengal.

Strategies for promoting research:

  • The University is promoting self-sustaining research and is encouraging for one faculty one Project.
  • The University has strong encouragement of international collaboration and is trying to strengthen Industry-Academia synergy. Nineteen MoUs have been signed with the institutions of repute encouraging faculty members to participate in faculty exchange and research programme. Collaboration has been established with different reputed universities and Institutes of India and different other countries like Australia, Japan, France, Germany, South Korea, France, Slovak and UK.
  • Conducted 5th Regional Science & Technology Congress 2022 (Region 7) very successfully during 06.01.2023 and 07.01.2023 jointly with the Department of Science, Technology and Biotechnology, Govt. of West Bengal.
  • The departmental Laboratories remain open (24X365) hours.

Major Innovations:

  • Crop Research & Seed Multiplication Farm (CRSMF): CRSMF delivers innovative products and knowledge for the community through field experiments. Govt-branded CRSMF seeds are in high demand in the hinterland. A vermicomposting unit and a germplasm conservatory of Mango have already been set up in the Crop Research and Seed Multiplication Farm (CRSMF) of this University.
  • Rural Technology Center (RTC): RTC is working towards lab to land concept implementation through skill improvement of local artisans/skilled labourers, improvement of knowledge base of the farmers, and training on agro-based small-scale businesses.
  • Planetarium: Burdwan University is the only university in India to have a planetarium that is used for enhancing the knowledge and interest of the school students from the adjacent areas in field of astronomy.
  • Museum and collections: Archaeological and Art antiques are maintained for internal and external researchers.
  • Civil Services Training Centre: It has been established in collaboration with Satyendra Nath Tagore Civil Services Study Centre, Kolkata and District Administration in 2022 and is imparting training the students for getting chance in Indian Civil Services and different allied services.
